Beach Drive - Panama City, FL

Project: Beach Drive Beautification

Client: City of Panama City Downtown Improvement Board

Project Cost: $50,000

The Chevron Fuel Terminal is one of only a few fuel depots located in a developed downtown area.  Most other terminals are located in an Industrial complex.  The management of this fuel depot saw an opportunity to partner with the community.

Working with the City of Panama City Downtown Improvement Board, we made a successful application the Florida Department of Transportation for a Beautification Grant.  However, due to budget cuts, the project was not funded.  The Downtown Improvement Board decided to fund the project anyway.

The challenge of this project was to screen the massive fuel tanks effectively.  We knew that whatever we used would have to be spaced tightly together.  We noticed that Laurel Oaks were growing in a fencerow across the street from the project, spaced less than two feet apart, so we felt comfortable spacing these trees tightly together.

We used other native plants such as Wax Myrtle and Saw Palmetto to complement the Laurel Oaks.

The final result is as planned – a dense native landscape that screens the fuel tanks and keeps the driver’s eyes on the road.
