This
Mediterranean style residence in Northwest Florida represents
many of the design principles that Alan D Holt, ASLA
promotes. Flowing curves in the landscape and retaining wall
soften the strong lines of the Architecture. The simple plant
palette and careful placement of trees shows off the building
to its best advantage.
The
retaining wall design accommodates over 10’ of grade change
within 15’ of the property line. The wall also accommodates
many functions on the waterfront site; a grilling porch,
swimming pool, lower seating area and transition area from
front to back yard.
Lighting,
landscape, irrigation and the selection of paving materials
were all part of the Landscape Architect’s scope.
Weekly site
visits during construction helped the landscape contractor to
conform to the intent of the landscape plans.

The main
goal of the landscape was to be “elegantly simplistic”. The
landscape is designed to maximize views to and from the
water. Simple lines reinforce, rather than compete with the
Architecture. Colorful plantings on the water side are
designed to be visible when looking back at the house, but not
distract from views to the water.
